June 12, 2009 Update: H1N1 (Swine) Flu is now a pandemic. It continues to cause illness and some deaths around the world.
On June 10, 2009, H1N1 (Swine) flu was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. This means that this new (novel) virus continues to spread quickly and is making people sick around the world.
The announcement does not mean that the H1N1 flu is any more severe, but that it is spreading worldwide and cannot be stopped. In most cases, those who have had H1N1 flu have had relatively mild illness, have recovered and have not been hospitalized. However, it is a new virus and it could change and become more severe at any time.
As of June 12, 2009:
- Larimer County has two confirmed cases of H1N1 flu;
- Colorado has 75 confirmed cases and no deaths;
- Not all cases of H1N1 illness are tested so it is likely that the number of actual cases is higher that what is reported;
- Most people with less severe symptoms do not need testing or treatment with anti-viral medication.
